uspol, long, + / pos, mentions bad things, possibly controversial
I like living in the United States of America, and I support the USA.
I do not support literally everything done in the name of the country, nor do I think anyone does. Holding children in concentration camps is clearly wrong; systemic discrimination against various groups is also obviously bad. But I don't feel that the best way to fix them is to abandon the country because some jerks are doing bad things on its behalf.
Stonewall was a riot. But Stonewall happened here.
The March on Washington was a protest. But the March happened here.
The move to ban slavery caused a literal civil war. But it happened here.
We did those things. And we are better for them.
Is everything excellent? No.
Have we started wars? Yes.
Have we oppressed large populations? Yes.
Have we failed to make reparations for that oppression? Yes.
Even so, do I think things are *better than they were*? Yes.
Do I think we have a long way to go? Yes.
Do I think we can continue to make things better? Yes.
If you think that we can't improve, then that's on you.
I think we can.
I think it'll take work.
And I support people in their efforts to do so.
Happy 4th of July.
mh (not mine, nonnegative, long ago)
Every now and then, I think back to when a friendly coworker said she was thinking about going into therapy after she graduated. I thought she meant as a profession, and she seemed like she'd be good at it, so my response was "Ah, yeah, that makes sense.".
I didn't realize what she meant ("... as a patient") until much later. I still wince when I think about it.
subtoot of various people over the years, about me
Other people, to friends / public: "I like lots of people and [probably | maybe] even you!"
Me: "Yeah, but you don't mean *me*, I'm sure."
Them: "Every. One. Of. You."
Me: "But still, surely not me."
(I still think I'm right. It appears I need explicit indications on this subject.)

black mirror s05 cws, marginally spoilery
From memory, may miss a few, but hopefully nothing major. Deliberately not necessarily in chronological order in the episode to avoid being too spoilery.
e01 / Striking Vipers: infidelity, minor animated violence, very minor blood
e02 / Smithereens: sui, drunk driver, ~minor blood, guns, kidnapping
e03 / Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too: family manipulation + abuse, some psych horror, kidnapping, drugs, possible sui ideation, ambiguous mouse + human death
Internal monologue while scrolling back through many hours of toots: "Who is this, and who boosted like a million of their toots into my timeline? ... oh, wait, @gdkar changed their avatar. Never mind."
(boosts appreciated if your followers might have useful ideas and you're amenable)
For those of you who've grown out bangs: what do I do with my hair while it's long enough to get in my eyes but not long enough to tuck behind an ear?
I recently obtained Bobby pins, which are doing a good job of keeping hair off my eyebrows etc. (which is unexpectedly nice), but I neither know how to arrange them to look nice, nor whether there are better alternatives.
work-adj, pride-adj, request
I've gotten a request from someone at work for any recommended reading on the history of pride month. Anyone have suggestions? I'm thinking less an exclusive focus on Stonewall, more that-plus-history-since-then.
(They're likely to send it to the whole company, so something with a broad audience would be good.)
Huh, discourse I know things about. (I didn't participate in any part of this particular event, but I can cogently argue - and have experience with - most sides of it.)
I'm keeping my mouth shut in public (besides this), but if you earnestly want to understand a given position, send me a direct message. I have zero interest in defending a position, but I can explain where most of the actors are coming from.
kinda bragging, re: kind of a subtoot, attention / busyness meta
(I am super not above making technical changes: the ability to mute boosts from a user? That happened because of a similar thing with a different person I follow. Just a question of what will work.)
