Ah, turns out they sent the wrong motherboard, and I didn't entirely space out on what I needed. 🎉 We'll see.
Yeah, whoops. There're... several reasons that won't work. Decisions, decisions.
(I suspect the motherboard is probably the thing that's broken. Do I pick up the exact same one for ~$600? Do I write it all off (and sell off some parts) and get a new server? Do I try to find an old server that's compatible with the scads of RAM I have (and ideally, the processors too)? Marginal complication is that it's an AMD build, which isn't super popular in servers.)
Going to attempt a motherboard replacement. Feeling like @sundog after realizing that the new one is nontrivially smaller and scheming to make it work, maybe.

commercialism, not actually a paid ad
@djsundog Just FYI, the "Tap" wearable keyboard (and mouse) is $50 off with free shipping using coupon "BlackFriday" through the 22nd.
Brings it close enough ($129) to a price I might be willing to pay, but I haven't decided yet.
scenes from a (not-quite) winter
Fixing a longstanding bug and then walking through the city with just a teal t-shirt* during the first commute-timed snow of the season, bouncing along and listening to Mika, even if everyone else is huddling up in their puffy jackets.
*: and pants and shoes and socks and a backpack, but you get the idea.
People who have a bunch of pins (the enamel or other single post kind): are there suppliers of (locking, ideally) pin backs you like?
(CC @iliana, not sure who else.)
kind of a subtoot, knives
Come to think of it, why *does* practically nobody have Swiss Army Knives? They're tiny, relatively cheap, come in cute colors if you like, and are super handy. Nail file, small screwdriver, small pry bar, short knife, tweezers, and scissors. (And a "toothpick", though it's not of much use for that most of the time.)
map, music, link to a store
Neat map labeled with titles of songs that refer to a specific place: https://www.wearedorothy.com/collections/world-maps/products/u-s-a-song-map-open-edition (there's also a world map version in the related products list)
(CC @djsundog, who may well have a copy already.)
We've been done before
And now we try to forge ourselves
We've been wrong before
There is a lot that we survived
I'll be true again
But until then
I'll fake the books
'cause everybody knows
This ain't heaven
Until everybody knows
